Dental Radiology: Dental X-Rays and 3D CT

Dental radiology is the field of dentistry that uses imaging methods to diagnose problems in the mouth, teeth and jaw. Decay between teeth, root-tip infections, bone loss, impacted teeth and cysts that cannot be seen during a visual examination can only be detected with X-rays. At ViraDenta’s clinic in Ümraniye, we use digital imaging for accurate diagnosis and safe treatment planning.

Types of X-Rays Used in Dentistry

Periapical X-Ray

Provides a detailed image of one or a few teeth, including their roots. It is used especially before, during and after root canal treatment.

Bitewing X-Ray

Used to see decay between the back teeth and the edges of fillings; it is very valuable for detecting decay early.

Panoramic X-Ray

Shows all the teeth, the jawbones and the jaw joint in a single image. It is used for a general assessment at the first examination and for planning wisdom tooth treatment and orthodontics.

Dental CT (3D / CBCT)

Cone beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional image of the jawbone. Because bone height and width, the nerve canal and the position of the sinus can be measured to the millimeter, it is important before implant planning and surgical procedures.

When Are Dental X-Rays Taken?

  • Detecting decay that cannot be seen with the naked eye
  • Assessing the need for root canal treatment
  • Monitoring bone loss due to gum disease (periodontology)
  • Determining the position of impacted wisdom teeth
  • Implant and prosthesis planning
  • Monitoring the development of permanent teeth in children

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

The radiation dose of digital dental X-rays is very low. X-rays are taken only when necessary for diagnosis and treatment, using the lowest possible dose. If you are or may be pregnant, you should always inform your dentist; non-urgent X-rays can be postponed.

Preparing for an X-Ray

No special preparation is needed for a dental X-ray. Before the X-ray, you will be asked to remove earrings, necklaces, glasses, removable dentures and metal accessories. The X-ray is taken within a few seconds, and patients usually feel no discomfort during the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Radiology

How much radiation does a dental X-ray involve?

Digital dental X-rays are low-dose imaging methods. Your dentist requests an X-ray only when it is needed for diagnosis.

What is the difference between a panoramic X-ray and a CT scan?

A panoramic X-ray shows the whole mouth in two dimensions. Dental CT provides a three-dimensional image and allows millimeter-level measurement of structures such as bone volume and the nerve canal; for this reason, it is preferred for implant and surgical planning.

Can dental X-rays be taken during pregnancy?

Non-urgent X-rays are usually postponed during pregnancy. When necessary, an X-ray can be taken under appropriate protection after the dentist’s assessment. Always inform your dentist if you are pregnant.

Can dental X-rays be taken on children?

Yes. When necessary, low-dose digital X-rays are also taken on children to monitor decay and dental development.
