Dental implant treatment, one of the most frequently chosen ways to replace missing teeth, consists of a titanium artificial tooth root placed in the jawbone and a crown (tooth) made on top of it. However, the treatment plan is different for every patient. In this article we look at the main criteria that determine whether implant treatment is suitable.
When Is Implant Treatment Considered?
- When a single tooth is missing
- When several teeth are missing
- When all teeth are missing and better retention of a denture is desired
- Patients who do not want to use a removable denture
Criteria That Determine Eligibility
1. Completed Bone Development
Implants are placed in people whose jawbone development is complete. Assessment is usually made after adolescence. There is no upper age limit, but general health is important.
2. Sufficient Bone Volume
There must be sufficient bone height and width where the implant will be placed. Bone volume is measured with dental tomography. If it is insufficient, additional surgical procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifting may be considered.
3. Gum Health
Active gum disease can negatively affect the long-term success of an implant. For this reason, periodontal treatment is completed before implant treatment if needed.
4. General Health
Uncontrolled diabetes, certain bone diseases, a history of radiotherapy to the head and neck area and some medications (for example certain drugs used to treat osteoporosis) can affect the treatment plan. It is important to share your medications and medical history with your dentist.
5. Smoking
Smoking can negatively affect healing and the integration of the implant with the bone. Stopping or reducing smoking during treatment is recommended.
What Is Assessed at the Examination?
At the first examination the mouth is checked, and the bone structure is examined with X-rays and, if needed, tomography. Your medical history is reviewed and the treatment options suitable for you are explained. Alternatives to implants, such as a bridge or a denture, are also evaluated together with your dentist.
The Treatment Process in Brief
The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. A healing period of usually a few months follows so that the implant can integrate with the bone. At the end of this period the restoration (crown) is prepared. The process varies from person to person depending on bone condition and the need for additional procedures. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age limit for implants?
Implants can be placed in people whose bone development is complete. There is no upper age limit; general health and bone structure are the deciding factors.
Can implants be placed in patients with diabetes?
In patients whose diabetes is under control, implant treatment can be planned after assessment by the dentist. Because uncontrolled diabetes can impair healing, assessment before treatment is important.
Is an implant impossible if there is not enough bone?
If bone volume is insufficient, suitable conditions can be created with methods such as bone grafting or sinus lifting. This decision is made after examination and tomography.
