Bad breath (halitosis) is a common problem that can affect social life. In a large share of cases, the source is inside the mouth, and with the right diagnosis it can largely be brought under control.
Causes Inside the Mouth
- Buildup on the tongue surface: Bacteria that accumulate on the back of the tongue are a major source.
- Gum disease: Gum inflammation and periodontal pockets can cause odor (periodontology).
- Cavities and old fillings: These can lead to food buildup.
- Inadequate cleaning of dentures and appliances
- Dry mouth: When saliva decreases, bacteria multiply more easily.
Causes Outside the Mouth
Sinusitis, tonsil problems, reflux, some systemic diseases, and certain medications can also contribute to bad breath. If no cause is found in the mouth, seeing a physician in the relevant specialty is recommended.
Temporary Causes
Foods such as garlic and onions, smoking, going without food for long periods, and morning breath are usually temporary.
Steps You Can Take at Home
- Brushing your teeth and cleaning your tongue twice a day
- Cleaning between your teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes
- Drinking enough water
- Quitting smoking
- Cleaning dentures every day
What Does the Dentist Do?
During the examination, cavities, gum health, and fillings are evaluated. If needed, a scaling and cleaning, cavity treatment, or gum treatment is planned. If no cause is found in the mouth, you are referred for further evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does mouthwash cure bad breath?
Mouthwashes can temporarily mask the odor, but they do not eliminate the underlying cause. Identifying the cause is important.

Gently cleaning the tongue from back to front with a tongue scraper or toothbrush is recommended.
Can bad breath be a sign of gum disease?
Yes. Persistent bad breath can be one of the signs of gum disease; an examination is recommended.
